SPORTS MEDICINE

Students in the Health Academy will first take a year of Medical Terminology, they will then be able to choose which path they would like to take; Patient Care or Sports Medicine.

In this pathway, students will:

  • Learn about athletic training & sports therapy

  • Learn how to treat specific injuries

  • Develop nutritional plans

  • Create training programs

  • Have access to in-depth training and internships

WORK-BASED LEARNING ACTIVITIES

  • Donning and doffing gloves

  • Reading & interpreting medical records

  • Soap notes

  • HIPPA guidelines

  • Basic care procedures


CAREER READINESS

  • Exploration of careers in the health industry

 Year 2: Intro to Sports Medicine

EXPERIENCES

  • Guest Speakers: Athletic Trainer from Savage Fitness and a medic from The Army

  • Representing Sports Med at recruitment events and parent nights


WORK-BASED LEARNING ACTIVITIES

  • Use of skin calipers to measure body fat percentage

  • Use of BRM (basal metabolic rate) to calculate daily calories needed

  • Creation of nutritional plans for ISHS staff for proper weight loss and muscle gain, including macro nutrients.

  • Workout plan creation based on desired results.


CAREER READINESS

  • Job Shadowing: Loma Linda University Medical Center, Crosswalk Clinic

  • Interning with district mobile health clinics, taking vitals


COLLEGE CONNECTIONS

  • Dual Enrollment with SBVC HEALTH-100 Introduction to Public Health

  • College campus tours – Loma Linda University

 

 

  Year 3: Advanced Sports Medicine  

 

EXPERIENCES

  • Guest Speakers: Athletic Trainer from Savage Fitness and a medic from The Army

  • Representing Sports Med at recruitment events and parent nights.


WORK-BASED LEARNING ACTIVITIES

  • How to properly tape ankle injuries, knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers

  • Rehabilitating injuries

  • Report on the causes of various infections, diseases, etc.

  • Physical Therapy plans

  • How to run an athletic training room/business


CAREER READINESS

  • NFHS Certifications: Heat Illness, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, ACL Injury, Concussion in Sports

  • Internship with athletic trainer, working campus sporting events

  • ISSA Certified Personal Trainer Certifications


COLLEGE CONNECTIONS

  • Dual Enrollment with SBVC HEALTH-100 Introduction to Public Health

  • College campus tours – Loma Linda University
