COMMERCIAL MUSIC

The Commercial Music Pathway teaches you about the industry of music recording and how music has evolved and the influences from other cultures into American music.

 

In this pathway, students will:

  • Understand basic music theory and fundamentals.

  • Explain how sound is created and transmitted.

  • Edit raw audio for a radio commercial.

  • Underscore a short animation/video.

  • Analyze music from other cultures and time periods.

  • Identify non-performing careers in music.

  • Set up a basic home recording studio.

  • Record, mix, and edit vocals and instruments.

  • Guest Speakers from the SBVC & CSUSB Music Departments

  • Field Trips to visit local college music programs

  • Live Performances

  • Field Trips to Music Conferences

  • Live sound stage setup  and breakdown


WORK-BASED LEARNING ACTIVITIES

  • Create music in GarageBand, an industry recognized software

  • Sound vocal booth isolation

  • Adding vocals to original beats

  • Recording music on the students instrument of choice

  • Live performances at schools, rally's and sporting events


CAREER READINESS

  • Jobs/careers in the commercial music industry research project

  • Tour of Music of Video game facility

  • Industry Guest Speakers

  • Setup and breakdown of ISHS Theater Stage

  • Operate live sound during ISHS Music or Theatre performances

  • Research artists and brand identity

  • Music industry operation 

  • Create chord progressions and loops in GarageBand

  • Verse composition and recording on original songs

  • Use of MIDI Keyboards for chord progressions


CAREER READINESS

  • Workplace tours of music production equipment facilities

  • Job Shadowing opportunities at Live Sound Companies, such as IJBS Productions & Room 9 Recording Studio

WORK-BASED LEARNING ACTIVITIES

  • Organize and run a live recording studio session

  • Create an identity board to promote an artist

  • Create, edit and promote a podcast

  • Organize, set up and tear down live sound for rehearsals

  • Promote the Commercial Music Showcase
